The curators of the Sculpture Trail reveal the names of the artists whose work will feature on the 2018 trail.
New for this year, artists across the South West were given the opportunity to apply to have their work included in the Sculpture Trail 2018 at Cockington Court.
The trail is an artist led project, delivered in partnership by local artist Phil Dixon and Cockington Court Centre Director, and artist, Marissa Wakefield.
The selection panel was overwhelmed by the interest and number of applications and have now selected 18 artists to design and create sculptures for the trail.
Marissa said: “This year’s trail builds on the success of last year. Phil and I wanted to develop our project further and offer artists the opportunity to apply.
“The remit this year was to apply with site specific work inspired by Cockington Court and its grounds. The panel and I were amazed by the amount of applications received and selected a great mix of styles and materials
“I found it overwhelming that all 18 artists selected are wishing to create new work especially for the show. For me, this illustrates a true commitment of the local artists in this area to celebrate culture in the Bay.
“There is also a very exciting audience engaging element to this year’s trail which visitors will find very inspiring.”
The successful 18 artists will create site specific work ready for the launch event on 25 May.
The artists included in this year’s trail are: Bridget Arnold, Jane Clift, Tony Fagan, Louise Dixon, Allan Poxton, Deborah Treliving, Zoe Singleton, Vera Stride, Nicholas Bellamy, Malcolm Curley, Rik Pitman, Phil Dixon, Marissa Wakefield, Janet Ventre, Peter Stride, Luci Coles, Jo Golesworthy and Donald Knaack.
Marissa Wakefield continued: “This year we also offered an opportunity for an artist to create an installation in the Kitchen Gallery in Cockington Court. There will also be a 2018 Sculpture Award for the favourite piece, which will be voted for by the visiting public throughout the summer. Also, there will be an additional display of work by local schools and colleges.”
The Sculpture Trail leads around the grounds of Cockington Court as well as some of the favourite hidden treasures, such as the Walled Art Garden. It extends inside Cockington Court, in the Kitchen Gallery and Manor House, showcasing more examples of all the participating sculptors’ work.
The Sculpture Trail had over 6,000 visitors in 2017. A number of the artists received commissions and had work sold in the galleries in Cockington Court.
